Homelessness & Public Safety

Addressing Homelessness & Keeping Our Communities Safe

A Balanced Approach for District 10

As I’ve been talking with apartment complex managers and residents in District 10, one of the biggest concerns raised is the rise in homeless encampments near residential areas. Many have expressed worries about safety, sanitation, and property values, and I believe we need a compassionate but firm approach to address this issue.

San Antonio is a great city, but ignoring the problem isn’t an option. Simply moving encampments from one area to another doesn’t solve the issue—it just shifts it. As your next City Council representative for District 10, I will advocate for real solutions that balance public safety with compassionate care for those experiencing homelessness.

The Problem: Homeless Encampments in Our Neighborhoods

✔ Safety Concerns – Residents and businesses are reporting an increase in break-ins, trespassing, and unsafe conditions.

✔ Public Health & Sanitation – Encampments often lead to trash buildup, unsanitary conditions, and environmental hazards.

✔ Impact on Property Values – Apartment managers and homeowners worry about the long-term effect on their properties.

We must do better.

My Plan: Solutions for a Safer and Stronger District 10

✅ 1. Expand Outreach & Mental Health Services

• Strengthen city partnerships with nonprofits, mental health organizations, and addiction recovery services.

• Increase funding for crisis response teams to assist unhoused individuals in getting treatment, not just temporary shelter.

✅ 2. Enforce Public Safety Laws & Prevent Unauthorized Encampments

• Work with SAPD and city officials to ensure public spaces remain safe and accessible.

• Implement designated safe zones where support services are available instead of allowing encampments to overtake residential areas.

• Push for faster response times to resident concerns about trespassing or disturbances.

✅ 3. Expand Transitional Housing & Job Training Programs

• Support more transitional housing options that provide temporary shelter while connecting individuals to permanent solutions.

• Advocate for job training and placement programs to help unhoused individuals re-enter the workforce.

✅ 4. Strengthen Public-Private Partnerships

• Work with apartment managers, business owners, and local organizations to develop community-driven solutions.

• Ensure District 10 receives its fair share of city resources to address homelessness without burdening property owners.
